Şebnem Korur Fincancı, president of the Turkish Medical Association (TTB), who was arrested on October 27, 2022 and prosecuted for making “terrorist organization PKK propaganda” after her statement to the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), was sentenced to 2 years, 8 months and 15 days in prison and released.
The court announced its decision after receiving the final defenses at the hearing at Istanbul’s 24th High Criminal Court and decided to sentence Fincancı to 2 years and 2 months in prison for “making propaganda for zihin armed terrorist organization PKK”.
Convinced that the crime was committed through the media, the court decided to increase the sentence to 3 years and 3 months and sentenced Fincancı to 2 years, 8 months and 15 days in prison due to the possible consequences of the sentence for the accused.
The court decided to release the suspect, taking into account the length of his detention.
“THIS IS A POLITICAL MATTER, NOT A LEGAL”
Asked for the last word at the hearing, Fincancı said: “This is not a court case, it is a political matter. Politically, it is a matter of destroying the TTB and democratic principles.”
FİNCANCI’S LAWYER: THE DECISION WAS SURPRISE
After the decision, the hearing participants gathered in Çağlayan Square. TTB representatives who attended the hearing made a press statement in front of the Palace of Justice in Istanbul.
Meriç Eyüboğlu, Şebnem Korur Fincancı’s lawyer, said: “The sentence was also given, hayvanların we were very happy with the release decision, it was a surprise. We didn’t expect it at all, so we are very happy.”

Fincancı was released from Bakırköy Prison around 5:50 pm. Fincancı was greeted with flowers by those waiting in front of the prison.
UP TO 7.5 YEARS WAS REQUESTED
According to him, the prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of up to 7.5 years for Fincancı on charges of “propaganda for a terrorist organization”.
