Presidential spokesman İbrahim Kalın had a telephone conversation with the United Kingdom’s national security adviser, Tim Barrow.
The meeting discussed political and economic relations between Turkey and the United Kingdom, defense industry cooperation, the Russo-Ukrainian war, Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO membership processes and regional issues.
As two strategic partners and NATO allies, it welcomed Turkey’s and the United Kingdom’s continued cooperation in many areas, especially in the defense industry. It was agreed that the two countries would evaluate new cooperation opportunities.
The meeting, which drew attention to Turkey’s role in NATO, emphasized the need for allies to act in harmony and solidarity against common security risks, emerging challenges and all terrorist threats.
It was stated that Sweden and Finland should fulfill their commitments set out in the Triple Memorandum and that Turkey is closely following the steps taken in this regard.
Concerns were raised about the deepening of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the cessation of ceasefire negotiations. It was emphasized that the prolongation of this war could seriously damage global peace and stability. The importance of any diplomatic effort to reduce the cost of war in the world economy, energy, food security and other areas was underlined.
It was argued that a solution based on Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity should open the path of diplomacy and relaunch negotiations. While pointing out Turkey’s responsibility in this process, it stated that it would resolutely continue its efforts for a diplomatic solution, including extending the duration of the Istanbul Consensus.
